World Music Selections

Ms. Ludowise welcomes students from around the world to her studio. Students have come from a variety of cultures, including Iceland, Japan, China, Vietnam, India, Mexico, Peru, Argentina, The Canary Islands, Finland, and the United Kingdom, among many. Below are a few examples of my students singing songs from their native land and culture.

DiệuLinh sings a favorite song from her homeland Vietnam. It is called Hương Xưa which means "Ancient Perfume", composed by Cung Tiến. DiệuLinh often entertains for the Bay Area Vietnamese community. Her CD of Vietnamese song Tinh Khuc Xua was released in 2017. She also has performed as a soprano soloist with the Mission College Choir and Orchestra in Handel's Messiah.

Akshar performs "Maa" from the movie Taare Zameen Par, written by the composer Shankar Mahadevan. This heart-warming Bollywood song, sung in Hindi, beautifully captures every child’s emotions for their mother, especially when they’re about to leave them. Akshar performed this on his high school graduation recital as he was about to go off to college.

Tristana, a native of Argentina, sings "El día que me quieras" composed by Carlos Gardel. She is performing live at a "milonga" which is a concert/dance party celebrating the Argentine "tango" music held at the Community Music School in San Francisco's Mission District. Tristana recently performed the villain 'Polinesso' in Handel's opera Ariodante at San Francisco State, where she is a master's degree student.

Maya sings "Hope is a thing with feathers", (composer ALYSIA, arranger Joshua Palkki, poetry Emily Dickinson). Maya developed a computer Artifical Intelligence (AI) program called "ALYSIA" that when given the lyrics, composes a melody for those lyrics, which she explains in the video. Maya was born in the Soviet Union, educated in Canada, and is now a Professor at Santa Clara University.
